Its the way he portrays memories, not as flowing events the way they actually happened but as parts of a whole. Memories are rarely true to fact, often melding together almost seamlessly. We dont hold memories in real-time either. Nobody remembers a day at the park over a 3 hour timespan to make sure they get everything. Memories are no more than snippets. No more than a collage of instants in time that last no longer than the blink of an eye. Its takes 10 seconds to relive a love found and a love lost. That is the ever-fleeting nature of memories that Gondry truly captures.
Using Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett to express that through probably helped.
