Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I found myself sitting down to this film yesterday afternoon and not quite getting up until it was over. I dont necessarily want to review the film, but its hard to critique something...without critiquing it. Its not the way the characters interact, or even the storyline that really kept me firmly planted. It was the concept behind it all that moved me, and probably everyone else who thought this film was a godsend. Michel Gondry was the visionary behind this project, and there's one thing that he does with this film that truly immortalizes it for me.

Its the way he portrays memories, not as flowing events the way they actually happened but as parts of a whole. Memories are rarely true to fact, often melding together almost seamlessly. We dont hold memories in real-time either. Nobody remembers a day at the park over a 3 hour timespan to make sure they get everything. Memories are no more than snippets. No more than a collage of instants in time that last no longer than the blink of an eye. Its takes 10 seconds to relive a love found and a love lost. That is the ever-fleeting nature of memories that Gondry truly captures. 

Using Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett to express that through probably helped.
